On
Wednesday evening, October 24, 2012 Gourmet Body Pastries offered a sweet treat
for breast cancer survivors, health enthusiasts along with some of Atlanta's
tastemakers at the first "Love Your Girls" breast cancer event at Salon Penna’e
in the Midtown community of Atlanta.
Breast
cancer survivor, Joyce Heckman of the Young Survival Coalition offered the women
some helpful advice about breast cancer especially among women under the age of
40 along with three very important tools to use to help detect whether you may
have breast cancer
1. Our
hands: women must learn the value of touch and how to properly conduct month
self breast exams including the lymph nodes under the arms
2. Our
eyes: women must visually examine their breasts look for changes in their
breast
3. Our
mouths: speak up if you notice changes in your breast; let your health care
provider know that something has changed in your breast area
According
to a recent report, nearly five Black women per day die needlessly from breast
cancer because they don't have information and access to proper care. Poverty
and racial inequities, not genetics, are responsible for the higher death rate,
even though more White women get the disease.
The
evening was full of laughter, love and libation compliments of Espada Tequila.
The message was clear, the "Love Your Girls" Breast Cancer event served
to educate, inform and inspire all women to explore healthier lifestyle
alternatives especially when it comes to what women put on their skin. The goal
was to provide women with the tools needed to combat breast cancer.
Gourmet Body Pastries, dessert-scented skin care products, was birthed out of a desire to use healthier body and hair care products. In December of 2009, when a close friend of the founder, Melanie Mitchell was diagnosed with stage 3 estrogen receptive breast cancer the desire turned into actual products. The careful blending of carrier oils, vegetable butters, essential oils and shea butter resulted in healthier skin products for the hair and body -- immediate results are noticed after one use.
