Exclusive Interview with Orange is the New Black’s Vicky Jeudy

Orange is the New Black is one of my favorite shows right now and I'm so ready for Season 2. I was elated when I got the opportunity to chat with one of my favorite characters on the show Janae Watson aka Vicky Jeudy. Originally from Queens NY and of Haitian descent Vicky got her start in the entertainment world competing in beauty pageants. She was a top 25 Semifinalist in the Miss NY USA competition, where she also took home the title of Miss Photogenic. As a college student, Vicky began to seriously study the craft of acting and gained experience in the indie film world. Her emotionally nuanced performances coupled with her professionalism created fast opportunities. A humanitarian at heart, Vicky is an avid reader in holistic health who, when not on set, can be found empowering the youth in her urban community.

Check out our interview below:

Do you have any characteristics similar to your character Janae Watson?

Vicky Jeudy
: Janae and I are both humanitarians at heart. I love Janae's strength in challenging the prison culture and questioning her environment. I'm very inquisitive and I have a passion for justice like Janae. Also, we are both good girls at heart. Janae and I have similar backstory in terms of our wholesome up bringing and kinda of being an outsider.

Was it hard to adapted to this role?

Vicky Jeudy
:
It wasn't hard but challenging and fun. Janae and I have opposite personalities and she is secluded from her family and friends. I did research on prison systems, solitary confinement and watched prison movies. On the first day of shooting Orange is the New Black took us to a real prison and that was scary. I would never want to be behind bars except on a film studio.

What was your favorite moment on the show?

Vicky Jeudy:
I have so many! My favorite is when Crazy Eyes threw the pie. I remember being on set that day and I was blown away watching actress Uzo Abuba (Crazy Eyes) perform. She is a superb talent.

I know you can’t reveal too much but what can we expect from season 2?

Vicky Jeudy:
If you thought Season 1 was good then WATCH OUT. Season 2 will blow your minds away and have you thirsty for more.

Since you have a Beauty Pageant do you miss that industry?

Vicky Jeudy:
I don't miss it but I have gained a great friend from that experience. My friend and I were competing against each other (we are both African American) in the pageant but we were so supportive of each other. She helped me because I was new to it. There was no jealousy or negative vibes.  My friend won first runner up and I placed top semi finalist. We are still good friends today.

I love your hair, what are some of your staple products?

Vicky Jeudy:
Thank you for loving my curls Arkeedah! I'm still experimenting with products and working on making my own. So far I like: Curly Whip by Hair Rules, Shea Moisture Leave in Conditioner, Kera Care Edge Tamer and Eco Styler Gel

What are 3 beauty products you can’t leave the house without?

Vicky Jeudy:
I can't leave the house without slightly filling in my eyebrows with Anastasia Brow Wiz in Brunette.  I am obsessed with eyebrows! Dabbing, a bit of concealer from Make Up Forever under my eyes and wearing some form of light pink lip gloss/chapstick. And that's it! I love the natural pretty look.
